Interesting Facts
Haddington is the County Town of East Lothian, functioning as the administrative centre, with a market, corn exchange, courts (recently closed) and council buildings. It has a variety of local shops, pubs, restaurants and other amenities, with easy walks along the banks of the River Tyne. It is easily reached from Edinburgh, lying just off the A1. St Mary's Church lies on land in the crook of the river, close to the historical Nungate Bridge over the Tyne. It is one of several monastic and religious sites in the vicinity, the earliest of which date back to at least 1139. The present building was established as a collegiate church in 1380. It survived the 'rough wooing' of Henry VIII, when Haddington was besieged (1548-49). Partially restored in 1561 at the instigation of John Knox, the building was finally restored to its former glory in the 1970s, when the derelict nave was re-roofed and re-connected with the chancel. The magnificent organ by Lammermuir Pipe Organs was inaugurated in 1990, completing the restoration of the interior. Finally, installed for the millennium, the bells round off this beautiful building and are justifiably regarded as one of the finest rings in Scotland. The largest parish church in Scotland, St Mary's is central to the life of Haddington and East Lothian. Besides worship, the church also hosts concerts and is used as a recording space because of its fine acoustics.
