10 Bells. Tenor 41-2-8 in C

Grid Ref NN 095 085

This heavy ten is a ringers\' playground, surrounded by good scenery, food and drink.

Getting there

CityLink buses from Glasgow and Oban have a regular service to Inveraray.

Parking is easiest in Avenue Car Park. The Co-op end of the car park is free. If approaching from Glasgow (A83) or Dalmally (A817 – when you arrive in Inveraray turn right onto A83 towards Campbeltown then immediately) turn right through white arch just after the Inveraray Inn and drive to the far end for free parking. If approaching from Lochgilphead (A83) turn left into car park and Co-op (before garage) and then turn immediately left into the free parking (rather than going straight on to the Co-op).

Facilities

Public toilets are on the front by the pier. There is a small charge.

Food and Drink

There are many places to eat and drink in Inveraray. The George Hotel is the best place for real ale.

Accessibility

The tower is not accessible due to a step before the entrance. There are 55 even steps to the ringing room with a rope handrail.

Interesting Facts

The Bell Tower is a War Memorial built by the 10 th Duke of Argyll to honour the dead of World War I at a cost of around £1million to today’s money.

It houses the second heaviest ring of 10 in the world and has probably the best view from a tenor box anywhere in the world.

In 1921 when the bells were delivered from Taylor’s Bell Foundry the lorry got stuck on the old Rest and Be Thankful road and the treble and second bell had to be unloaded and left at the side of the road to allow the lorry to continue. They were picked up the next day.

The bells are maintained by a voluntary group of ringers, mainly but not exclusively from Scotland.

During the winter, the ropes are removed and stored in a friendly airing cupboard.
